The latest monthly Mus2okur update is now available with new additions and revised works. With the new added notes, now the database has reached 1375 pieces. Below is a list of this month´s new works. You can access these and the revised works in the Playlist tab after updating Mus2okur over the Internet.

Users with version 2008.11 or later of Mus2okur can simply click the "Update" button on the main screen of the application. Users with older versions will need to uninstall the older version and install the latest version, 2010.06, from our web site.

Mus2okur Invited to Fasıl (February 23, 2009)

The Mus2okur team was invited to the last three of the monthly fasıl evenings organized under the lead of journalist Fehmi Koru and with participation from noted journalists, bureaucrats and many other music lovers from various circles.

During the first two fasıls, our team sang along, like many others in the audience, with the songs performed which were primarily in the Hicaz and Nihâvent maqams. At the third fasıl, which was widely mentioned in newspapers and on the web thanks to a surprise appearance by Aydın Doğan, we took on an additional task with assistance from the event´s top-notch organizer Erhan Köknar:

Mus2okur Multimedia Encyclopedia of Turkish Music was introduced to the guests with a brief presentation at the beginning of the fasıl. During the first part of the evening, which featured a pre-selected repertoire, Mus2okur was projected on a large screen showing the sheet music for the performed songs, as well as the lyrics of the songs flowing in "karaoke" style during music performances. For many of the works that were requested by the audience or selected by solo-performing guests in the event´s second part, lyrics were also shown on projection. Ahmet Hakan, who was pleasantly surprised by "the appearance of sheet music on a gigantic screen", mentioned Mus2okur in his column in the Hürriyet newspaper on February 22, 2009.

Also featured in Taha Kıvanç´s Yeni Şafak column titled "Teknolojiye Meraklıysanız" ("If You´re Into Technology") shortly after initial product release and subsequently having seen widespread acceptance and praise by the media, Mus2okur has thus made its appearance in this important event of the recent days.

Mus2okur February Update (February 2, 2009)

The monthly updates to Mus2okur and its database have once again resulted in notable improvements and additions.

First and foremost, it is now possible to listen to music performances in the Scores/Lyrics section with accompanying Turkish percussion instruments. We have also fixed the synchronization issue regarding works composed in the longer usuls, which was especially noticeable on older computers.

Half of the additions to the Mus2okur database this month have been selected from works in the türkü form.

We hope to continue improving and expanding Mus2okur with your suggestions.

Users with version 2008.11 or later of Mus2okur can simply use the "Update" button in the application to obtain the newest version. Users with older versions will need to uninstall their current version, download and install the latest demo version from our website, and upgrade their software to the full version using the "Update" button.

If you haven´t purchased Mus2okur yet, you can check out the latest improvements in the software by downloading and installing the demo version.

A Major Upgrade for Mus2okur Now Available

The latest monthly update to Mus2okur - Multimedia Encyclopedia of Turkish Music, a computer program designed to teach the fundamental concepts of Turkish classical and folk music with textual, audio and visual materials, delivers substantial improvements:

The most significant of these is the improvement in the performance of Turkish music instruments. The tanbur, kanun, ud, ney and bağlama instruments sound much more realistic than before. Moreover, it is now possible to play a musical work with 2 Turkish instruments (or if an instrument ensemble is selected, up to 4 instruments with a stereo soundstage). Another noteworthy addition is the new ASIO support in Mus2okur. ASIO is a standard supported by professional audio hardware and improves the sound quality even further.

One of the most highly requested features ever since the release of Mus2okur, mostly from our users abroad but also from conservatory students in Turkey, was the English version of the software. With the latest update, it is now possible to use all the features of Mus2okur in English and Turkish simply by changing the computer´s regional settings to the appropriate locale.

Among other notable changes are the addition of new musical works to the database bringing the total to 1100, corrections and improvements to existing works, additions of new items to the composers´/lyricsts´ biographies as well as the maqam and usul sections, and improvements in the overall performance of the software thanks to more efficient use of the computer´s main memory.

Now is a great time to download the program for those who have not tried it yet. We also strongly recommend that users who have tried the previous versions of Mus2okur give it another look with the vastly improved Turkish music instruments.

Mus2okur Presentations

Mus2okur, the Multimedia Encyclopedia of Turksish Music, has been downloaded and/or purchased by thousands of people since its release. Boasting extensive features that will appeal to every music lover from the hobbyist to the professional, from the apprentice to the master, the software has garnered attention from conservatories, music associations, foundations and choirs. Upon invitation of some of these organizations, a number of Mus2okur presentations took place in various locations.

The overall program of a presentation is as follows:

Following a short presentation accompanied by slides projected on a wall or curtain, the program´s features, visual and animated aids and audio examples are demonstrated live and shown on projection. During or after the presentation, the audience is able to ask questions and make comments.

Most of the audiences so far have included people who had either purchased the full version or downloaded the demo version of Mus2okur. However, most of these people also admitted they only had an understanding of the full capabilities of the program after watching the presentations.

The presentations were also an opportunity for the audience to instantly buy Mus2okur. With the special offers provided in these meetings, the hosting organizations and their members save on the full purchase price.

Presentations continue to take place by request of various music associations and choirs. As Data-Soft supplies the necessary equipment for the meetings, including the projector, loudspeakers and computers, the hosting organization only needs to provide the presentation space.

Beşiktaş Music Association Hosts November Mus2okur Presentation

Beşiktaş Music Association hosted a Mus2okur presentation as part of their Guest of the Month meetings for the month of November. The meeting on Thursday, November 29 at 18:30 began with the presentation of the software followed by a discussion of its place in Turkish music education.

Mus2okur Presented at ITU TMDK BİSED Hall

A Mus2okur presentation took place on November 15, 2007 as part of Istanbul Technical University Turkish Music State Conservatory´s “BİSED” (scientific and artistic events). The audience of 45, including professors, students and outside participants, contributed to the meeting with invaluable questions and suggestions.

As there were both Turkish classical and folk musicians among the participants, this dichotomy was one of the central subjects of the discussions. The collection of works in both of these genres in one repository were welcomed by most of the participants.

The meeting had to end due to the schedules of the students, with wishes that it would be repeated soon.

New Photos of Composers and Lyricists Added to the Database

As part of the monthly updates to the database, new photos, mostly of female composers, along with additions and corrections to biographies have been added to Mus2okur.

Mus2okur Presented at Yıldız Technical University

Mus2okur was presented and demonstrated to an audience of 40 people, mostly comprising professors and students at the Faculty of Art and Design on October 18, 2007. During the meeting held at Hünkâr Dairesi, the participants showed substantial interest with questions and comments.

The presentation began with a mission statement for Mus2okur and an outline of its intended audience, followed by a live demonstration of the program showcasing its various features with visual and audio aids. Catering to this particular audience, the presentation included more technical details on Turkish music theory compared to previous meetings.

The particiapants congratulated the developers for the breadth and professionalism of the project.

Mus2okur Presented at Gelenekten Geleceğe Müzik Günleri

One of the presentations that took place on 8-9 September as part of Gelenekten Geleceğe Müzik Günleri (“From Tradition To The Future” Music Days) 2007 in Antalya was on Mus2okur. The meeting, made possible with the backing of the Akdeniz University administration, with additional support from Antalya Chamber of Physicians and the Turkish Music Mailing List, was held by M. Kemal Karaosmanoğlu. Following a section detailing the purpose of the software was a live demonstration of Mus2okur on a projection screen.

Another presentation on Ra-Dü-Se Solfège at the same event also made use of Mus2okur. The program displayed a score and the syllables Do-Re-Mi and Ra-Dü-Se in ´karaoke´ style on the screen, while the audience sang along.

Kanun Sound Samples Updated

The kanun sound samples included in the Mus2okur database have been updated and made available on the Internet. Users will be able to obtain these samples using the Update command on the main menu.
